Celebrating Scholars' Successes

Matthew Diaz - Columbia University Fly-In
Energy Institute High School, Class of 2017

I had the honor of attending the Columbia Engineering Experience October 9th - 11th. It was an experience I will never forget. Everything from the style of learning, the amazing campus, and the warm and welcoming students made it seem like I found my perfect fit. Columbia changed my perception on what an engineering degree looks like and how I can make a difference as an engineer. During the trip, we visited the Bloomberg Headquarters in New York City. The tour consisted of talking to Columbia alumni who began as Mechanical Engineers but switched to a more finance focused career. Speaking with them gave me a better understanding of what kind academic path I want to take. Overall it was eye-opening experience, and even though the New York weather was colder than what I'm used to in Texas, Columbia still felt warm and inviting. I am applying to Columbia University Early Decision on November 1st.

Haeyun Lee - Named a Finalist for QuestBridge
High School for Performance and Visual Arts, Class of 2017

Congratulations to Haeyun for being named a finalist in the highly competitive QuestBridge College Matching Program.  QuestBridge is a powerful platform that connects the nation's brightest students from low-income backgrounds with leading institutions of higher education and further opportunities.  Haeyun completed an intense application over the past several months and went through an intense interview and screening process.  As a finalist, Haeyun has a chance to be matched with one of her top four schools (MIT, Yale, Stanford, and Princeton) and if selected will be awarded a full scholarship. We are excited to hear which school matches with Haeyun!

Lindsey Staskus - Founded "Beyond the Cover"
Westside High School, Class of 2017

Last year, I founded a club called, "Beyond the Cover", which was created to build a strong foundation of basic reading skills, and fundamental words for children who do not have a motivated reading environment at home. We initially started the club at Jewel Askew Elementary for our first year, but we decided to expand Beyond the Cover to another neighboring school, Ashford Elementary, for our second year. The club now volunteers at Askew every Tuesday afternoon and Ashford every Thursday afternoon from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. After months of recruiting and preparing for the expansion, we finally began at Ashford on October 20th. We are off to a great start, and I cannot wait to see the impact we have on the kids!
